Church-Wide Response to Haiti Disaster

Church-Wide Response to Haiti Disaster

Jan 25, 2010

The devastation wrought by the January 12th earthquake upon Haiti has catalyzed nations and individuals into action. What is our reaction as Christ’s church–more specifically as this local church? Right now the leadership of Metanoia is encouraging everyone to participate as they feel led individually (the previous post outlined some avenues of support). This means talking it over in your family, LTG, or community group.

We are not yet encouraging one corporate response because the real work of community rebuilding is only just beginning. Other than praying and giving resources, there is not much else we can do until the humanitarian situation is under control and authorities have fully assessed the situation.

This means that in the future there may be a more unified and concerted response on behalf of Metanoia, but this must wait until development agencies and churches have assessed the situation enough to enable foreign churches to provide strategic support. Therefore in the meantime check out the webpages of the following organizations. They can direct you right now on how best to meet the needs of Haitians:

  • World Vision – World Vision is a Christian humanitarian charity organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. They have several funds established for short-term relief and long-term development in Haiti.
  • Florida Baptist Convention – THE FBC is partnered with indigenous Haitian churches to distribute supplies through those churches to the population. This is key because these churches will remain ministering to their communities long after relief and aid workers leave. Even $20 can buy a 100 lb bag of rice which can feed over 200 people!
