Community groups are missionaries of the church. They proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom by living out certain shared practices among a specific community of people. What does this mean?
- A group… CG’s are more than a group of individuals gathering at a specific time and place. CG’s are defined by the symphonic unity of their members’ purposes, goals, and actions in their daily lives. Members of a CG work together toward a common purpose when apart and gathered together.
- God’s kingdom… The ultimate goal of every CG is to work with God in re-extending his righteous reign over all of creation, one community at a time. This is the goal of redemption and was good news to Jesus (Mk 1:14-15). This means living out the ramifications of the gospel in your own life as a citizen of the kingdom (Matt 5-7), proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and working toward its inward (spiritual) and outward (social) manifestations among your community (Matt 4:23, 6:10, Isa 9:6-7)
- Shared practices… Everybody in a CG shares certain practices that occur when the group is gathered as well as scattered. These practices are the nuts and bolts of the CG, which ensure that the CG’s purpose is accomplished in a natural and biblical manner. These help establish biblical rhythms in our lives.
- A specific community… Members of a CG commit together to focus on serving one specific group of people, which can be defined any number of ways (geographically, culturally, relationally…). This helps groups to focus on meeting the unique needs and challenges of one particular group of people.
