first community group

Community groups are groups of Christians who decide to live out certain shared practices together in an effort to bring God’s kingdom to bear on the specific community to which He has called them.

Community groups are defined by the common practices their members share in addition to the group of people to whom they are sent. Shared practices are those actions which, done individually and corporately, help to shape the group’s culture and empower them to effectively embody and share the gospel. They include:

  • Shared Table – demonstrating mutual respect, trust, and fellowship with others
  • Prayer – relying on God’s guidance and empowerment for mission
  • Care – concretely expressing to others God’s goodness, power, and love
  • Proclamation – communicating the good news of God’s kingdom in word and deed
  • Biblical Devotion – letting the Bible inform and guide our individual and group lives
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34-35

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
- Acts 2:42-47

“So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.”
- 1 Thessalonians 2:8 (c.f. Matthew 22:34-40, 1 Thessalonians 2:1-16)
