August is Partnership Covenant renewal month! We renew our Covenant in August in preparation for our church’s birthday in September, which is also the same time that we start a new fiscal year.
This year cards are available at Worship Gatherings for Partners to use for Covenant renewal (unlike years past, you will not be signing a Covenant again). The Covenant renewal cards state:
“Having been brought by divine grace to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to give up myself to him, and having been baptized upon my profession of faith, in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, I do now, relying on His gracious aid, solemnly and joyfully renew my Covenant with the Metanoia Church Covenant Partnership.”
There is a place to print and sign your name on the card. After signing, please drop the card into the information box.
During this month, Partners are encouraged to review their Covenantal affirmations (see Partnership Covenant) and our church’s Statement of Faith (see our Beliefs page). This way, you take time to reflect on our Covenantal affirmations and the doctrines that knit us together in Partnership with one another.
You may be asking: why are we using a Covenant renewal affirmation card rather than signing a Covenant like we did in years past?
This is an excellent question! Our intention and heart for Covenant renewal was never that you would have somehow ceased to be a Partner at the end of July each year and needed to become one again through Covenant renewal. Instead, we believe that covenantal relationships remain until one party breaks the covenant or until death terminates the covenant. With this in mind, our Elders realized that signing a Partnership Covenant every year was not reflective of our understanding of Covenantal Partnership. Signing a Covenant renewal card is more in line with the spirit of thoughtfully and joyfully affirming the covenantal vows that you previously made.
If you have any questions about the Covenant renewal process, please talk with an Elder.
